When Lolita is hospitalized for a fever, Quilty visits her, and she runs away with him. Humbert, distraught, spends years searching for her.

They eventually settle in a college town. Lolita grows increasingly unhappy, rebellious, and demands money to save for a secret escape. She begins receiving small sums of money from a mysterious stranger — later revealed to be the playwright Clare Quilty, who has been following them.

He stays, marrying Charlotte purely to remain near Lolita. When Charlotte discovers his diary revealing his true desires for her daughter, she runs out in shock and is killed by a car.

Three years later, he receives a letter from a now-17-year-old, married, and pregnant Lolita. He visits her, offering her money for her silence. She reveals she left with Quilty, who was cruel and threw her out when she refused to perform in his pornographic films. Humbert asks her to leave with him; she refuses. Heartbroken, he gives her all his money and drives away.

Humbert retrieves Lolita from summer camp. They embark on a cross-country road trip, during which he manipulates her into a sexual relationship, framing it as the "games" of a devoted stepfather. The film portrays their intimacy more overtly than Kubrick's version, though it stops short of graphic depiction.

In 1947, Humbert rents a room in the New Hampshire home of the flirtatious widow Charlotte Haze. His intention is to stay only briefly, until he sees her 14-year-old daughter, Dolores (whom he privately calls "Lolita"). He becomes instantly and fatally obsessed.
