    The girl smiled.

    Synthetics don’t cry. But coolant, she decided, is close enough.

    Amber sat in the chair.

    Behind her, Lily didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She just sat back down at the table and poured a glass of orange juice that would never be drunk.

    The pulse fired.

    “You left me, Mommy,” Lily said. “You died in the crash. But you didn’t stay dead. They put you in a machine. And you never came back.” The girl smiled

    Her last thought was not a tactical assessment. Not a final report. Not a prayer to a god she never believed in.

    “Now you know,” the insurgent woman said. “They didn’t just take your life. They took your death. They won’t even let you die like a human.”

    Amber closed her eyes. She didn’t need to. Her optical sensors could see through her eyelids. But she wanted the darkness. She wanted the human ritual of it. Amber sat in the chair

    Amber froze.

    For the first time in four years, she felt pain. The bullet wound in her shoulder screamed. Her spine-port ached where the memory wafer had been. Her chest—her empty, mechanical chest—hurt with a grief so vast it had no file size.

    “I will,” Amber said.

    “Lily,” Amber whispered.
