Let’s be honest: Windows 7 is officially extinct. Microsoft pulled the plug on security updates years ago, and most modern software vendors have followed suit. So, where does that leave your PCB design workflow? Can you still run KiCad, the world’s favorite open-source EDA suite, on Windows 7?
The short answer is —with a few important caveats. The Last Compatible Version If you try to download the latest KiCad 8 or 9 installer, you will hit a wall. The newest releases require Windows 10 or 11. However, the KiCad team provides excellent long-term support for older stable branches.
Just don’t expect to collaborate on the latest KiCad 9 projects, and please—keep that machine off the internet.
