Mira’s heart hammered. She thought of her own small collection of flaws. The uneven bridge of her nose. The slight asymmetry of her mouth. And she was beautiful.

Not a mask. A face. Fully formed. Eyes closed. Lips slightly parted. It was beautiful in the way that all the grafts had been beautiful—perfect, poreless, symmetrical. And it was made of pieces. Mira saw her original eyelid. Helen’s original cheek. A dozen other students’ abandoned freckles, chins, hairlines, and dimples.
But beauty has a weight. And grafts have a memory. The slight asymmetry of her mouth
