Foot And Foot -

And the human dreamed of walking without limping.

Left Foot opened his toes, then closed them. He had never thought of it that way.

Right Foot pressed against him, arch to arch. "Don't be. We're not right or left. We're just foot and foot ."

Right Foot, startled from a doze, whispered back, "What?" foot and foot

Left Foot had shifted forward a quarter inch. Right Foot, without being asked, slid back to match.

The next morning, the human stood up. "Right, let's—"

Left Foot was jealous.

" 'Right, let's go.' 'Right, step here.' 'Right on time.' You're always right . I'm just the leftover."

Right Foot was quiet. Then, softly: "Do you know what it's like to be me?"

"I'm the one who kicks the loose rug," Right Foot said. "I'm the one who finds the puddle in the dark. I take the first fall. And when the human is sad, who carries all the weight? Me, leaning into nothing. You get to rest." And the human dreamed of walking without limping

"You think you're better," Left Foot muttered one night, as the human slept.

But something felt wrong. The human wobbled. Looked down.

He had reason. Every morning, the human looked down and said, "Right, let's go." Right Foot got the command. Right Foot got the name. Right Foot was the leader, the first into every shoe, the one who tapped along to music while Left Foot just… waited. Right Foot pressed against him, arch to arch

Left Foot scoffed. "Wonderful, I imagine."
