Julian tilts his head. “See what?” The next morning, Julian visits Danny’s apartment to return a jacket. Lila lets him in. She studies his face—the scar, the posture—then goes pale.

“You didn’t see that?” Danny gasps.

But that night, Danny finds Julian waiting outside his apartment. A truce forms, jagged and uneasy. They agree to meet at a diner. Over coffee, they compare memories. Julian remembers a mother who died when he was twelve. Danny remembers no mother—only a string of foster homes. Julian remembers a quiet childhood in the suburbs. Danny remembers a house fire, age eight, and waking up alone.

Julian tries to explain. Halfway through, Lila begins to cry. “You’re the same,” she whispers. “You’re both the same man.” Julian tilts his head

Julian pauses the screen. His hands shake. He rewinds. Watches again. Then again.

The tattoo is there. A coiled spider, black and intricate. She studies his face—the scar, the posture—then goes

Then he deletes the message. He calls her instead.

And that’s when the spider appears. Not the tattoo—a real spider, enormous and glistening, crawling out of Julian’s shirt collar. He doesn’t react. Danny screams. The spider scuttles onto Julian’s face, then dissolves into smoke.
