“Hey, El,” he said. His voice wasn’t just audio. The shader had added reverb —the way his voice bounced off the plastic trees, the way it was swallowed by the humid air.

The shader caught the stubble he’d always missed on his jaw. It traced the laugh lines around his eyes. As he turned and saw her, the shader rendered the micro-expression he’d never been able to fake: first surprise, then a slow, melting joy. She could see the blood vessels in his sclera.
