Three BLACK CARPENTER ANTS emerge from a hole in a rotting fence post. They carry no food. They carry a bead of mercury.

When a young scientist accidentally uploads a human strategic AI into an ant colony’s pheromone network, two rival ant species evolve sentience overnight—and begin fighting a war using human tactics: espionage, economics, and atomic (chemical) weapons.
